This Thursday at Intersolar Europe, Jan Muller, Technical Director at Solarcentury will be discussing the Opportunities & Challenges of On-Grid Solar in Africa. Jan has been directly involved in the design and development of solar projects across Europe, Africa and Latin America.

Solarcentury has a wealth of expertise on the African continent. Solarcentury in East Africa, based in Kenya, has built two of the largest systems in east Africa and are currently building two more multi-megawatt systems in Kenya. These range from solar on the roof and on the ground, to solar installed on carports on the roof of a shopping centre in Nairobi and a system combining solar and battery storage for an insect research facility in Kenya. Solarcentury has also connected a range of solar roof projects in South Africa.

So it is fair to say that Solarcentury has the technical know-how, reliable project partners, and significant project management expertise, to build solar at all scales and for a range of industries, for businesses who want to install solar to control energy bills and cut their carbon footprint.

The panel discussion will explore a range of issues affecting the development of solar markets on the African continent:

• Considering the major developments that PV industry has gone through in conjunction with the great potential of sub
Saharan countries, what is the number one reason that solar failed to take off, especially in sub-Saharan countries?
• Incorporating variable renewables such as solar into the grid
• Cost of capital and access to financing that will guarantee an acceptable ROI / risk assessment for high quality
projects
• How companies mitigate those risks in African markets
• Lessons learnt from European countries that African markets can learn from.

Time: 11.45 – 12.50 in ICM
Place: Room 14B
James Watson, CEO of SolarPower Europe is the panel moderator.
