We took our sweat bands and leg warmers to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, and HM Treasury, and did a strenuous work-out to ensure politicians are listening: people in the UK want a solar future, so let’s keep the Feed-In Tariff, the scheme that makes solar viable. Check out our moves in this video!
Government proposals to reduce subsidies for solar by 87% is already having a devastating impact on the industry, with thousands of job losses already announced as one solar company after another closes business. The Solar Trade Association has estimated that the jobs of up to 27,000 people in the solar energy sector (out of a total of 35,000) could be at risk.
Yet so many people in the UK want a new clean energy system, with solar as a part of this. Solar is consistently the most popular form of renewable energy among the British public. In contrast, least popular forms of energy are shale gas from fracking and nuclear. George Osborne needs to stop pushing 20th-century fuels as the solution for 21st-century energy problems; fossil fuels don’t make economic sense.
Frans van den Heuvel, CEO at Solarcentury comments, “If the consultation is enacted, we can expect to see a wholesale collapse in solar take up by homeowners and businesses – just at a point in time when most other countries are escalating their solar deployment having seen the dramatic impact the technology can make in tackling climate change.”
Earlier this month, Solarcentury’s Engineering team took to the streets of London to protest the solar cuts. Read more about that here.
